OUR VERDICT
Despite being one of the world's most famous web hosting companies, HostGator's services are just too simple for us to recommend.
FOR
Excellent website builder
Competitive introductory prices
AGAINST
Terrible security features
Deceptive price structure
Someone else's best web hosting options will most certainly be very different from yours. This can make finding a hosting provider difficult, particularly if it's not an industry you're familiar with.
In this HostGator analysis, we examine every aspect of this popular web hosting service. On the surface, there's a lot to like with a variety of hosting options, a strong website builder, and reasonable prices. But let's see what a more thorough examination shows.

HostGator review
At first glance, HostGator's hosting packages tend to be a very good value for money. However, not everything seems to be as it appears. To get the advertised prices on shared hosting plans, for example, you'll have to pay for 36 months in advance. When it comes time to renew your plan, you will also pay much more.
HostGator subscription options:
$119 a month for a 12-month plan ($1,428 total cost)
Hatchling's cheapest shared hosting package costs $2.75 a month for a three-year subscription ($10.95 if paid monthly). It allows you to host one website with unmetered bandwidth, unlimited storage, a free SSL certificate, and a free domain name for the first year.
Upgrade to the Baby plan for unrestricted website connections (from $3.50 a month for a three-year plan). A premium Business subscription (starting at $5.25 per month for a three-year plan) comes with a free dedicated IP address, free SEO software, and an advanced Positive SSL certificate for added protection.
Basic WordPress hosting for a single site with 100,000 monthly visits and 1GB of data backup starts at $5.95 per month for a Starter package. VPS plans with more advanced features start at $19.95 per month, and dedicated server hosting starts at $89.98 per month.
Reseller hosting is also available, with the Aluminum package offering 60GB of storage, 600GB of bandwidth, and unlimited website support for $19.95 a month. Alternatively, for $3.84 a month, you can use the Gator Builder website builder.
Features
HostGator provides a simple hosting service with a limited number of advanced features. Some of the most notable inclusions are mentioned below.
The Gator Builder website builder from HostGator, for example, is fantastic. It has similar design versatility to market leaders like Wix, comes with a suite of advanced tools and a good template library, and costs as little as $3.84 per month.
Both shared hosting plans include a $150 Google Ads credit and a $100 Microsoft Ads credit. These are a great way for those who are new to digital marketing to get their foot in the door and start learning the ropes.
HostGator's unrestricted all shared hosting appears to be excellent on the surface. In a nutshell, it has unlimited bandwidth and storage. In fact, if your website begins to consume too many server resources, you will be asked to upgrade to a more advanced subscription.
Interface and in use
The checkout process at HostGator is easy, but there are a few things to keep in mind. For starters, you'll need to keep track of how long your subscription will last. Shorter plans are significantly more costly. You'll also want to take a close look at the hosting add-ons, as some might be pre-selected for you.

Meanwhile, the key dashboard offers a simple way to manage everything from domains and hosting to email accounts and ongoing billing. When it comes to managing your hosting, you'll have access to the cPanel control panel, which is user-friendly and filled with advanced features.
Support
You can contact the HostGator team via phone or live chat if you need technical assistance. The customer service representatives are generally pleasant and informative, which is a big plus. There's also a strong information base with a variety of guides, tutorials, and other self-help materials.
Security
HostGator's security features are, unfortunately, mediocre at best. DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack security, a good firewall, and a free SSL certificate are the only features you'll get. Malware detection and removal are entirely absent, there is no support for multi-factor authentication, and you will be prompted to buy a SiteLock security subscription in order to gain access to more advanced features. The competition
While HostGator provides a good hosting service, there are several better options available. Hostinger is one of our favorites, with high-quality shared hosting starting at $0.99 a month. This is backed up by a wide range of innovative features as well as industry-leading security software. To learn more, read our Hostinger review.
InMotion Hosting is another excellent choice. It is a little more expensive than HostGator, starting at $5.99 per month, but it provides premium service across the board. All plans are based on cutting-edge hardware and backed by a professional support team. For more detail on the web host, read our full InMotion Hosting analysis.
Final verdict
When all is said and done, HostGator isn't as good as it seems. Sure, its advertised prices are very low, but they are at best deceiving. The checkout method is deceiving, security features are almost non-existent, and there are no advanced features to speak of.
On the plus hand, the user interface is clean and simple to use, and the customer support is outstanding. Unfortunately, we are unable to recommend HostGator based on this information.
In the end, if you need high-quality, dependable hosting, you should look elsewhere.
