How to transfer a domain from HostGator

The nameservers associated with a domain will remain the same as it is moved (e.g., ns1.OldRegistrar.com and ns2.OldRegistrar.com). HostGator nameservers are preconfigured for use with HostGator hosting, so if you use their services, your domain's nameservers will not be disabled after the switch. So, unless you're using a different hosting service, you won't have to worry about your website going down after the domain transition because the nameservers will work properly and you won't have to re-configure any DNS settings for your domain.

If you host your website with a different provider and your domain uses HostGator's default nameservers, it's a good idea to change your domain's nameservers to your hosting provider's nameservers to prevent any downtime after the domain shift.

Note: Since domain registration and hosting are two separate services, the domain transfer process will not automatically move your website hosting to Namecheap. Please send a ticket to our Hosting Transfers department if you wish to move your hosting and domain name from HostGator. We will gladly help you move your website hosting to Namecheap!

Please obtain an Auth/EPP code (if applicable) from HostGator before sending a domain transfer request with us. Also, ensure that the domain is unlocked and that the contact information associated with the domain is correct and up-to-date.

1. How to use HostGator to unlock your domain and get an Auth code:

  • Log in to the domain management section of your HostGator account.
  • Go to the Domains tab after you've signed in:

  • Click on the domain name in question.
  • Move your mouse over the icons on the left-hand side, it will expand a list of settings for your domain.
  • Click on Domain Locking:

To unlock the domain, toggle the button to the Locking OFF location on the Domain Locking tab, then press Save Domain Locking to save the change:

You should be able to get the Auth code once the domain has been opened. To do so, go to the Request Your EPP Key page and fill out the form:

2. If the domain's Whois privacy security service is allowed, you must also disable it.

How to turn off HostGator's privacy security service:

  • Log in to the domain management section of the HostGator website.

  • Go to the Domains tab after you've signed in.

  • Click on the domain name you're looking for.

  • Select Domain Privacy after hovering your mouse over the icons on the left.

  • Pick the Public radio button on the Domain Privacy page to disable Domain Privacy, then press Save to save your changes:
